What are the advantages and disadvantages of polyester fabric?
Polyester fabric is a common synthetic fabric in our daily life, often used in outdoor items such as outerwear, bags, tents, etc. Its characteristics are good wrinkle resistance and shape retention.
Advantages of Polyester Fabric:
Firstly, polyester fabric has high strength. The strength of short fibers is 2.6-5.7 cN/dtex, and the strength of high-strength fibers is 5.6-8.0 cN/dtex. Due to its low moisture absorption, its wet strength is basically the same as its dry strength, and its impact strength is 4 times higher than nylon and 20 times higher than viscose fibers.
Secondly, the elasticity of polyester fabric is extremely strong. The elasticity is close to wool, and when it elongates by 5% to 6%, it can almost completely recover. Repeatedly rubbing polyester fabric can quickly restore its original shape without leaving wrinkles. The elastic modulus is 22-141cN/dtex, which is 2-3 times higher than nylon and cannot be compared to other fabrics.
Thirdly, polyester fabric has excellent heat resistance. It can be said that polyester has the best heat resistance and strong plasticity among synthetic fabrics. If made into pleated skirts, it can maintain the pleats well without excessive ironing.
Disadvantages of polyester fabric:
Firstly, poor staining. Due to the lack of specific dyeing groups and low polarity on the polyester molecular chain, dyeing is difficult and the dyeability is poor, making it difficult for dye molecules to enter the fiber. But it has good color fastness and is not easy to fade.
Secondly, poor resistance to melting. Polyester is the most heat-resistant fabric among synthetic fabrics, with thermoplastic properties, and can be used to make pleated skirts with long-lasting pleats. Meanwhile, polyester fabrics have poor melt resistance and are prone to forming holes when exposed to cigarette ash, sparks, and other substances. Therefore, when wearing, try to avoid contact with cigarette butts, sparks, etc.
Thirdly, poor moisture absorption. Polyester fabric has poor moisture absorption, causing a stuffy feeling when worn, and is prone to static electricity and dust contamination, which affects its appearance and comfort. However, it is very easy to dry after washing, and the wet strength hardly decreases, without deformation, and has good washability.
